So a quick Google search will tell you there are about 210 million drivers in the usa.
There are 254 million cars registered (also according to Google)
Takata is recalling 33.8 million cars.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
So let’s assume for sake of argument that the average driver has 1 car and the rest are just owned by let’s say jay Leno.
So that’s means about 1 in 6 drivers in the usa is gonna be effected by this recall! That’s crazy!
So every one is gonna know someone who had a recalled car from takata, as a matter of fact you will know 10 on average based on the average person knowing around 600 people.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
So odds are you know 10 people driving around with unsafe airbags in their car, and we yet know what cars are effected fully yet!
Let your friends and family know about this cause this is gonna be a huge deal, (and be long lines to replace at dealerships)
Speaking of that how do you replace 33.8 million air bags? I have heard there is no way takata will have the production power to ship all of these in a short amount of time, and even if they could there is still a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! at west coast ports, so manufacturers are gonna have to turn to maybe domestic suppliers of air bags( if there are any) and that’s gonna be costly, and still take a lot of time. ((Edit I have been told there is atleast one big supplier in the U.S. based out of Utah))
I’m sure Steve Letho can give some input on this next bit, but if the car is unsafe demand a free rental until the car is fixed from the dealer. I did this a lot with my challenger’s air bag issues so I know it can be done.
My take away is, try to be the first one in to get it fixed, let all your family and friends know ASAP, and drive as safe as you can. Don’t let the dealer make you drive a car that’s unsafe.
((edit updated list of nhtsa list !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ))
Ike is co-host of the Untitled Car Show (

) he has owned 2 dodge challengers, a Volvo C30 / V70XC/ V70R / 740 and a Saturn Ion. He is a new father and loves driving and autocrossing. He can jerry rig with the best of them, and he wrote his bio in third person. He also has 2 dogs, 2 cats and is a crazy person some say!

My mum is affected by the recall. I think Wes here on Oppo will be affected as well. Probably a lot of Opponauts are affected, honestly.

So what is the name of your car show?

Apparently my car narrowly missed the recall, and by narrowly, I mean the V6 models must have gotten a different airbag for a couple of years.

Lord help us all if it effects Miatas

There are several domestic suppliers, there is a big firm in Utah (autoliv) that supplies airbags to major manufactures for example

I got my wife’s 325iT done 2 weeks ago, after waiting months for the part to get in. And I got it done much sooner than I would have otherwise because I deal with the parts department daily and they earmarked one for me as soon as they arrived. The supply problem will be the hardest part of this whole deal. So there, now everybody here knows someone who had it done.

Did they give you a loaner while you were waiting?

I hear that.

Weird that they’d use a different bag by engine spec, but maybe the interior trim was a little different, or they changed the dash structure somehow. Lucky for you either way!

Nope, I didn’t need one. They shuttled me to work in a new i3 though, which I was very happy to experience.

I had my 325ci done a few months ago, waiting for the parts to come in was the worst part, something like 6 months to get them after I received the initial letter and contacted my dealer. The fix itself was done the same day as I dropped the car off.

I think things like this should be just as big a story as the GM ignition switch crap. Shit happens, gets buried, gets exposed and then the company deals with it. Once things came to light I think GM handled it pretty well. The 2014 GM recall mania I think was good for GM - get this shit fixed and behind us. From everything I’ve read about the Takata problem they’ve been trying to bury it but it just wouldn’t go away. Of course, that’s my totally uninformed ‘I mostly read the headlines and not the entire story’ viewpoint... (actually I do usually read the entire story but I’ve been out of the car news loop for a few months, been too busy at my work and life...)

Side question - I tried to subscribe to your podcast but the feed shows the last show on march 10th. Have you published new podcasts since then or am I finding the wrong feed? Thanks!

GM deaths are up to 104 compared to 6 for Takata. Just saying.

Confirmed deaths as weird as that is. I'm sadly sure that number will climb
